Session 1: E-Safety

Welcome to my first ever blog!

As part of my ICT assignment I'm going to be posting reflective blogs about what I learnt in the sessions. I am a student trainee teacher, and my blogs will be about the use of ICT in primary schools. I hope you enjoy reading my blogs!

My first blog post aims to highlight the importance of E-Safety and demonstrate the risk that can occur.

What is E-Safety?

E-Safety refers to the safe and responsible use of technology, largely aimed at children and young people, who are mostly at risk. It also educates parents, carers, teachers of the risk that young people are at, due to technology; e.g. social networking sites, online gaming programs. Moreover, E-Safety also alerts adults of the risks due to misguided personal information.

What are the issues?

Some of the E-Safety issues include:
  • Social networking sites
Such as, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter etc. Social networking sites are one of the most known riskiest issues, where children are most vulnerable. Children can build a relationship online, unaware of who is behind the 'other side of the screen', children then feel they can trust the 'other person' and begin to reveal personal and private information about themselves and/or others around them.
  •  Websites
It is important that when using any websites that a website user is careful and responsible, especially if the website collects personal information, for example; address, card details etc. Therefore, when entering personal information, it is necessary to check that the website has a privacy policy. Some of the website risks includes; risks of financial scams, identity theft, viruses.
  • Bluetooth
Bluetooth can be used to send files, intended to bully and harass a person.

How is E-Safety promoted?

As I have already stated, E-Safety is mainly aimed at children and young people, through posters, school assemblies and videos.
There are many videos designed to promote E-Safety aimed at children, using cartoon characters and children. Below are some E-Safety videos:
